Benslow Music: *ONLINE* Exploring the life and compositions of Ethel Smyth, Louise Farrenc, Fanny Hensel (Mendelssohn) and Clara Schumann

Location:
Benslow Music Trust, Benslow Ln, Hitchin SG4 9RB
Starts:
12:30pm
Ends:
2:30pm
An exploration of the life and compositions of four important women composers. Why are they not better-known? We will investigate both the lives and the compositions of four important women composers from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Whilst we will look at their compositional work in general, and take in a variety of their works on the way, we will focus on certain specific pieces: Smyth's opera The Wreckers, Farrenc's Third Symphony, a group of Hensel's songs and Schumann's Piano Trio. Plenty of musical examples will be played along the way. In the case of Hensel and Schumann we will think about their relationship with their, respectively, better-known brother or husband, and the impact that that had on their own compositions and how those have been viewed. We will also make comparisons between them and both Smyth and Farrenc, who did not have the 'famous relative' problem to deal with. What will we cover? An introduction to the life of each composer. A look at the range of their compositions. A more detailed look at one piece (or group of pieces). A consideration of how these pieces fitted into the prevailing musical world. Looking into how these composers fitted into a male-dominated world. The importance of their music for today. What is the schedule? Ethel Smyth - Friday 8 October 2021, 12.30-14.30 BST (21/OL88) Louise Farrenc - Friday 15 October 2021, 12.30-14.30 BST (21/OL89) Fanny Hensel (Mendelssohn) - Friday 22 October 2021, 12.30-14.30 BST (21/OL90) Clara Schumann - Friday 29 October 2021, 12.30-14.30 BST (21/OL91) What will we accomplish? By the end of this series you will be able to… Understand and appreciate their breadth of compositional talent. Know more about how they struggled, as women, to get their musical 'voices' heard. Understand why they are still not well-known. Explain their importance for today. Do I need any particular skills to participate? No particular skills are required, just an interest in good classical music! No musical proficiency will be assumed. Is there anything I need to bring? Notebook/pen. Series ticket: £35 (£10 per talk). Tickets can be booked via the website.

19 year old saxophone sensation comes to JAZZ UP with a stellar quartet! Emma Rawicz is a young saxophonist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and composer making big waves on the UK music scene. At the age of 19 she has already recorded her debut album, Incantation featuring guitarist Ant Law. It consists entirely of her own compositions and is due to be released in early 2022. Emma has also built a reputation as both as a bandleader and a session musician, regularly playing at major national jazz venues including Ronnie Scott’s and EFG London Jazz Festival. Emma’s influences range from modern jazz and fusion to folk and soul; key figures in her musical development include Chris Potter, Ari Hoenig, Kenny Garrett, Joe Henderson and Chick Corea. Growing up in rural North Devon, Emma discovered jazz at the age of 15, and took up the tenor saxophone a year later after having spent her childhood immersed in music as a violinist, playing largely folk and classical music. Emma studied at the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and Chetham’s School of music and now conducts her career alongside her studies in jazz saxophone at the Royal Academy of Music. She is also part of NYJO, playing in their Jazz Orchestra and composing and playing in the Jazz Exchange Programme, as well as doing educational work as a NYJO Ambassador. Emma is a natural performer and will be presenting more of her original music from her new project, as well as music from her forthcoming album. Her music has a truly unique sound, fusing her many influences, and her compositions range from lilting Afro-Cuban inspired grooves to hard-hitting funk numbers. Line-up: Emma Rawicz – sax Dave Preston – guitar Conor Chaplin – bass Jay Davis – drums + DJs: Les Jazz Rats Eric (landlord of The Highlander Pub) and Sten (North Herts FM resident hip-hop DJ) spin jazz and rare grooves exclusively on vinyl.
