North Herts Museum: DAY COURSE - RESEARCH METHODS IN LOCAL HISTORY

Location:
North Hertfordshire Museum, Brand Street
Starts:
9am
Ends:
4.30pm
Local History is a specialised area of study that has a wide appeal: However, investigating the past can be full of pitfalls that may trap the unwary, such as the danger of 'backyardism' (finding that nationally significant events all happened in one's local area). You will learn the importance of consulting original sources and why freely-available old translated documents are unreliable. This day school aims to help the newcomer avoid some of the mistakes that can beset the work of local historians. Participants will learn how to find sources of information, how to recognise which are reliable and which are less so, and to organise their work. Most importantly, you will discover how to get the results of your research to a wider audience. Course Tutor: Keith Fitzpatrick-Matthews is Museum Curator and Heritage Access Officer at North Hertfordshire Museum. He has worked in archaeology for over 30 years. For more details and programme email: northhertsmuseum@north-herts.gov.uk Purchase online or pay at the Museum Welcome Desk. Research Methods Course: £90.00
